Translucent Alabaster, hand carved

This Miniature Gladiola started as an experiment to see if it could be carved in stone. Delicate, layered petals in translucent stone, accented with translucent color at the edges, worked well and have a nice effect. It is meant to be displayed upon a shelf or in a bud vase.

This photo shows the Glad in its pre-color state for the purpose of illustrating levels and contours.

Mini Alabaster Gladiola, II by ~stormcarver is a great example of what a steady hand and calm patience can achieve in carving something so thin and small from stone. The textures of the petals and shapes is perfectly executed. (Featured by ^Thebuild)

There is more detail than I thought, when you hold it in this position. Wow. Those must be very sharp tools to carve details this small!
(And yet you don't even have bandaid-covered fingertips! ;) )

No bandaids, but the occasional safety wrap and the constant callouses!

This piece was a test run to see if I could carve them. I really enjoyed testing the limits of the stone with the layers and the scallops/folds of the petal edges.

For tools, I used a 3mm skew blade and tight-angle Dockyard Microtool on the scallops. I use larger tools for shaping, of course, but looove the "detail" and "micro" tools. A diamond sharpener is one of my my best friends, too!

Wow this is beautiful!
I don't know if you've read "the Elenium" By David Eddings. In that series there's a magical blue stone carved into the shape of a rose. Even in my imagination I wouldn't think I would be possible to carve a flower this detailed.
I want to pick it up and turn it over and inspect it.
It's amazing.
